Adriano Spatola's first appearance in the literary world was associated with the neo-avant-garde, a literary movement active in Italy between the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the following decade; the group was initially associated with the magazine Verri. One of its important accomplishments was the publication of the anthology of poetry I Novissimi (The Very New Ones, 1961), which includes texts and poetic declarations by Elio Pagliarani, Alfredo Giuliani, Edoardo Sanguineti, Nanni Balestrini, and Antonio Porta. This literary group was also open to other intellectuals (Spatola among them) and had been officially founded in Palermo in 1963 under the name "Gruppo '63". Its essential goals were a drastic renewal and an opening of contemporary literature, a sharp rupture with the preceding movements (from neorealism to the circle supporting the magazine Officina) and with every form of ideology, and a recovery of the historic avant-garde movements, including futurism...
