After leaving her Indiana home as a young woman, Zorrie ventures to Ottawa, Illinois, where she takes a job at the Radium Dial Company. Years after leaving the job and restarting her life back in Hillisburg, Indiana with a man named Harold, Zorrie has no inclination that her work at the radium company will have adverse effects on her body and mind. Throughout her life, Zorrie struggles to reconcile her past and present realities as a means of overcoming great loss and grief. The novel explores themes including, longing, memory, and hope.
