"Witness" is a short story by American writer Jamel Brinkley. It was originally published in The Paris Review in 2020, and later included in the collection The Best Short Stories of 2021: The O. Henry Prize Winners. In the story, a male narrator named Silas lives with his sister Bernice and her new husband, Dove, in a small New York City apartment. Over the course of the narrative, Silas tries to manage his frustrations with Dove while watching his sister's physical and mental health unravel before him.
