Winter Counts by David Heska Wanbli Weiden is a thriller written in the informal narrative voice of Virgil Wounded Horse, a Lakota vigilante who seeks to carry out justice on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The plot follows Virgil as he uncovers the mechanisms behind a criminal drug network that has ensnared his teenage nephew, Nathan, while also attempting to deal with the grief he still carries from the deaths of his father, sister, and mother. Weiden’s novel explores themes of community, justice, corruption, and sacred objects.
