White Tears Overview
In the novel White Tears, young white men Seth and Carter are obsessed with 20th-century African-American musicians. One day, they create a fake but authentic-sounding blues track in order to demonstrate personal mastery over African-American musical traditions. However, they soon discover that the track is a real blues song from the 1920s that was lost to time. The creator of the song, Charlie Shaw, returns as a type of spirit to wreak vengeance upon the people who ruined his life, as well as on the people who attempt to falsely claim African-American musical culture as their own. The novel explores themes of cultural appropriation, racial division, history, and racial oppression.
