Where the Line Bleeds, a novel by Jesmyn Ward, is the story of Joshua and Christophe, twin brothers who have grown up in southern Mississippi in the care of their grandmother. After graduation, Joshua gets a job at the dock. When Christophe is not hired, he begins selling marijuana. A confrontation with the twins' estranged father – a desperate addict – leaves Christophe with a serious wound. As the novel ends, Joshua insists on Christophe getting his life back on track. The novel's main themes are disillusion, effects of drugs, facing responsibilities, working class realities, and inherent strengths and weaknesses.
