Everything you need to understand or teach When We Were Birds by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo.
When We Were Birds, a mystic love/ghost novel by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo, shares Yejide St. Bernard's and Emmanuel Darwin's very different opinions of the dead. In Yejide’s family, the task of caring for the dead is passed from mother to daughter. Yejide has recently inherited this role. Meanwhile, Darwin, who grew up Rasta, a religion that forbids him from dealing with the dead, is forced to take a job as a gravedigger to support his family. Yejide's and Darwin’s lives and beliefs will become intertwined when they meet during a supernatural storm at the cemetery where Darwin works. Themes include relationships with death, life-sustaining decisions by females, observing traditions, and abiding by oaths/vows. The author uses birds as a motif throughout the novel.
