When Stars Are Scattered Overview
Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed’s young adult graphic memoir tells the true story of Omar and Hassan Mohamed, two young brothers growing up in a refugee camp called Dadaab in Kenya. The memoir, told from Omar’s perspective, follows the pre-teen brothers through their later adolescence as they try to figure out their future after fleeing war-torn Somalia. While caring for his disabled brother Hassan, Omar starts going to school, wondering what fate has in store for him. Omar learns along the way to trust in his community, and to use the gifts God has given him. The memoir explores the themes of community, fairness, and waiting.
