Everything you need to understand or teach What the Fireflies Knew by Kai Harris.
What the Fireflies Knew is a coming of age novel written by Kai Harris and published in 2022. It is told in the first person from the perspective of the protagonist, KB. While the narrator’s young age of 10 and 11 years old and the language of the novel are indicative of a middle grade novel, the mature topics of teenage sexuality, sexual assault, drug addiction, and abuse are more common to books in the young adult genre. The novel follows KB and her sister as they spend the summer with their grandfather in Lansing, Michigan after their father has died and their mother is in treatment for depression. Main themes in the novel are the importance of sharing traumatic experiences, the importance of representative language in literature, the ways in which poor choices can lead to poor outcomes, the ways in which coming of age is hindered by trauma, and the perpetuation of trauma in families.
