We Have Always Been Here Overview
We Have Always Been Here: A Queer Muslim Memoir is a memoir by Samra Habib. Habib immigrated from Pakistan to Canada as a child. Growing up, Samra struggled to reconcile various aspects of her identity, including her sexual identity and her relationship to the Islamic faith. In her childhood and teenage years, she experienced much sexism and many restrictions on her freedom. In her adulthood, she began to travel on her own in order to explore her identity and the world around her. Eventually, through her work as a writer and photographer, Samra became an advocate for queer Muslims around the world. We Have Always Been Here explores themes of queerness and LGBTQ+ rights, sexism and femininity, home, family, and Muslim identity.
