Traci Chee’s young adult historical fiction novel, We Are Not Free, tells the story of 14 Californian Japanese-American teenagers put into internment camps during World War II. Spanning from spring 1942 - spring 1945, Chee includes true historical locations and artifacts of this racist American policy, and how they each impacted these 14 teenagers in their own way. From the streets of Japantown San Francisco, to internment camps, to war in Europe - each of the 14 characters brings the themes of dual identities, racism, and the complexities of patriotism to life through their own perspectives.
