We is a 1921 novel written by Yevgeny Zamyatin. It is set in a future, urban society that regulates nearly every aspect of its citizens' lives including their names, which are a series of letters and numbers. The novel itself is D-503's journal. It chronicles his struggle to be a dutiful citizen while unexpectedly getting caught up in a revolutionary movement, during which he learns he has a soul and experiences love. Ultimately, however, he is called before the government to explain his actions and face his punishment.
