Wayward is a novel by Dana Spiotta. The story follows Samantha “Sam” Raymond, a 53-year-old woman living in Syracuse, New York. Following the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Sam has become disillusioned with U.S. politics, as well as with her marriage. She separates from her husband and moves to a more impoverished neighborhood of Syracuse. While living on her own, she struggles with how to define her role in the Syracuse community, and she also struggles with her role as a parent to a 16-year-old daughter. The novel explores themes of parenting, independence, society, love, and mortality.
