In Julia May Jonas's novel Vladimir the 58-year-old unnamed first person narrator is so afraid of her impending obsolescence that she begins ardently pursuing an affair with her younger colleague, Vladimir. As a self-proclaimed unsuccessful writer and the wife of a man accused of sexual indiscretion, the narrator's sense of self feels fragile. Being with Vladimir, the dashing and charming new junior professor, therefore, promises to bolster her self-confidence and infuse her life with excitement. However, as soon as the narrator's fantasies start coming true, she begins to question what she really wants. The novel explores themes including desire, intimacy, and identity.
