Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots Overview
Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of my Hasidic Roots is a memoir by Deborah Feldman. Feldman was raised in the ultra-conservative Satmar community, a sect of Hasidic Jews largely based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Feldman, raised by her grandparents after both her mother and father essentially abandoned her, loved books and dreamed of being a writer as a young girl. Her religious and family traditions had her married and having a child before she was out of her teenage years. But by her mid-twenties, Feldman chose to divorce her husband and leave her Satmar community with her son, Yitzy, to achieve her earlier dreams and reflect on what it took to seek and secure her own freedom.
