Undocumented, by Dan-el Padilla Peralta, is subtitled “A Dominican Boy’s Odyssey from a Homeless Shelter to the Ivy League.” As he describes his early years as both an undocumented immigrant in the United States of America and an enthusiastic scholar of classical literature, the author details how the tension between the two different sides of his life forced him into occasionally painful decisions and actions. At the same time, the narrative also considers themes related to the importance of community, and the tension between keeping secrets and living in truth.
