British nature writer Robert MacFarlane makes 11 journeys to places underground and often forgotten in his 2019 book Underland to understand the human impact on earth and to face human extinction. The book takes a long, hard look at what humans will leave behind and contemplates death using mythology and contemporary science. The book tackles subjects such as climate change, nuclear waste storage, melting glaciers and other human-caused phenomena.
