Underground America: Narratives of Undocumented Lives, edited by Peter Orner and with a forward by Luis Alberto Urrea, presents the testimonies of 24 undocumented immigrants in the United States. Hailing from all corners of the world, including Mexico, El Salvador, China and Iran, these immigrants have come to the United States hoping to start new lives and find better opportunities for themselves and their families. In the course of their time in the U.S., the immigrants featured in Underground America meet with a number of challenges,such as drugs, domestic violence, deportation, and imprisonment. Underground America covers themes such as gender, national identity, law enforcement, and criminality.
