Unbecoming Overview
Jenny Downham's Unbecoming is the story of Katie, a teenager working toward her final year of school as she struggles to cope with an over-protective and too-involved mother, a brother with special needs, an absent father, and her own emerging sexuality. Katie is surprised to discover she has a grandmother, Mary, who is in the mid-stages of dementia, struggling to hold onto the hope that she might somehow reunite with her daughter Caroline (Katie's mother) before it is too late. Together, Katie, Caroline, and Mary have to learn that each has strengths they can share with the others. Together. they are a family. The novel's main themes are the importance of family, the need to be true to oneself, and society's expectations.
