Tyll Overview
Daniel Kehlmann’s Tyll reimagines the life and adventures of the irrepressible prankster Till Eulenspiegel, one of Germany’s most beloved and familiar folk tale figures. The novel, set in continental Europe amid the brutality, violence, and suffering of the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648), fuses elements of historical fiction with the fantastic in recounting the adventures of Tyll Ulenspiegel, an itinerant entertainer, magician, juggler, and acrobat. The novel, at once dark and unsettling yet bristling with caustic farce, examines the themes of the relationship between myth and history, the tension between reason and faith, the absurdity of authority and the value of skepticism, the devastating impact of war, and the heroic human will to survive.
