Two Serious Ladies Overview
In Jane Bowles' third person novel Two Serious Ladies, friends Miss Goering and Mrs. Copperfield are tired of allowing societal expectations to control their lives and identities. In an attempt to seize autonomy over her own life, Miss Goering sells her palatial estate and removes to a remote cottage. Shortly thereafter, she pursues a series of sexual affairs which bolster her sense of confidence and power. Meanwhile, Mrs. Copperfield's trip to Central America with her husband, leads her on a parallel journey toward sexual awakening. Both women must decide how much they are willing to sacrifice in the name of independence and happiness. The novel explores themes including, fear, desire, and autonomy.
