Trumpet is a novel by Jackie Kay. The story centers around Joss Moody, a famous black, Scottish jazz trumpeter. After he dies, it is discovered that he was actually transgender. Only his wife, Millie, knew this secret. Through the recollections of people close to Joss—including Millie and their adopted son Colman—the novel examines Joss’ life and personal struggles.
