Transcendent Kingdom is a literary novel by Yaa Gyasi. the story follows a 28-year-old Ghanaian-American scientist named Gifty. Gifty is studying the neurons in the brain responsible for addiction, a subject she was drawn to because her older brother, Nana, died of a heroin overdose when Gifty was 11 years old. When Gifty's mother begins suffering from a mental crisis, she comes to stay with Gifty. As Gifty tries to help her mother, Gifty reflects on her religious upbringing and on Nana's death. The novel explores themes related to religion, addiction, and family relationships.
