In Jewell Parker Rhodes's young adult novel entitled Towers Falling, a fifth-grader named Deja Jenkins narrates the story. Since being evicted from their home over the summer, Deja and her family have been residing together in one room at the Avalon Family Shelter. Deja has a great deal of apprehension about her first day at a new school, but on the first day of fifth grade, she is delighted to find not just one friend but two in a friendly pair of students named Ben and Sabeen. Over the course of the narrative, Rhodes highlights themes such as sacrifice, grief, and hope.
