Toms River Overview
Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation, is a work of nonfiction by Dan Fagin. It chronicles the pollution of a growing New Jersey town and the cancer cases that sprang up throughout it. The author teaches the reader a history of epidemiology alongside the events that took place in town. Several large businesses, left unchecked, created a manmade disaster area that is still being cleaned up today. The residents organized and fought back, forcing politicians to investigate. The author, an environmental journalist, uses the story as a tale of commercialism gone wrong, where there were no controls set in place to protect people.
