To Shake the Sleeping Self is a nonfiction memoir by Jedidiah Jenkins. The central event of the book is Jenkins’ 16-month bike trip from Oregon to Chile. Jenkins began the trip when he was 30 years old. He had originally planned the trip as a way of disrupting his routine and exploring more of the world. Along the way, he found himself wrestling with elements of his identity and upbringing that had caused him distress and uncertainty throughout his life. The book explores themes of identity, exploration, risk, education, and relationships.
