This Is My America Overview
Kim Johnson's debut novel, This Is My America, follows the teenage protagonist, Tracy, as she navigates racial inequity and injustice in the criminal justice system. After her father is wrongfully convicted of the brutal murder of a white couple, Tracy dedicates her life to fighting for his freedom. With less than a year until her father's execution, Tracy is focused on his case. This focus changes when a white teenage girl is murdered and Tracy's brother, Jamal, is accused of the crime. As history repeats itself, Tracy realizes there is a thread running between both cases that leads to a dark revelation about her community and its ties to white supremacy. The novel explores themes of time, language, interracial relationships, the media, and the criminal justice system.
