Things You Save in a Fire is a novel by Katherine Center. The story follows Cassie Hanwell, a 26-year-old firefighter, who transfers to a new fire department as the first woman to ever work there. She begins to fall in love with one of her coworkers, but she tries to fight her feelings so as not to jeopardize her career. Meanwhile, she helps to take care of her ailing mother, from whom she has been estranged for the past ten years. The novel explores themes of love, forgiveness, sexism, family, and trauma.
