There Are No Children Here: The Story of Two Boys Growing Up in the Other America by Alex Kotlowitz is a true account of brothers Lafayette and Pharaoh Rivers living in the Henry Horner projects in Chicago. Plagued by gang violence, the brothers struggle to survive. They develop idiosyncrasies such as a severe stutter and being easily startled as a result. Pharaoh begins to focus on academics and eventually, with help from the author, is admitted to Providence-St. Mel., which is known locally as a prestigious school. Racial profiling affects Lafayette in more ways than one and he becomes bitter and depressed. However, he stays in school and even transfers to a better school that can help him improve academically.
