Theory of Bastards Overview
Audrey Schulman’s novel Theory of Bastards, set in the near future, is part scientific exploration, part love story, and part post-apocalyptic thriller. The narrator tells the story primarily from the point of view of Frankie Burk, a biologist who studies the mating choices of females, both human and bonobo. While Frankie recovers from a recent hysterectomy, due to endometriosis, she builds relationships with the bonobos and her assistant, Stotts. Their ability to trust each other and cooperate is put to the test when technology fails and the group struggles to survive. The novel explores dependence on technology, sexuality and motherhood, and overcoming physical pain.
