The Yellow Birds is a coming of age novel, where young soldiers have to deal with the atrocities of war. While it is a novel, it seems as if the author is drawing on his own personal experiences from serving in the Army and in the Iraq War. The novel brings humanity and integrity into question as the characters serve in the Iraq War and deal with the aftermath of the war when they return to the U.S.
