The Year of the Witching Overview
Alexis Henderson's The Year of the Witching is set in a fantastical world with its own mythology and unique history. Immanuelle is a 17-year-old girl who lives in Bethel, a small village isolated from the rest of her world by a haunted forest and a gate that only the elite religious men are able to travel in and out of. When Immanuelle ventures into the woods one day, she accidentally sets off a curse that brings down four plagues on her community. Immanuelle attempts to save her community, but as she does so she begins to question whether or not her corrupt society is worthy of saving. The novel explores themes of patriarchy, history, isolation, sacrifice, and vengeance.
