The Year of the Flood is told in third person narration by Toby and Ren who are ex-God’s Gardeners. The start of each section is a speech by the leader of the God’s Gardener’s Adam One about a Saint’s day. The main themes are: isolation, fellowship, reconnecting with nature, and rebirth. The story follows Ren and Toby in the days following the Waterless Flood as they struggle to survive and find other survivors in a world that has become hostile to mankind. The story of the God’s Gardeners is interwoven through this tale as a series of flashbacks from Ren and Toby.
