“The Writer” is an 11-stanza poem by American poet Richard Wilbur. It was first published in his collection The Mind Reader (1976) and has become one of his most beloved works. The title refers to the poet’s daughter, who is depicted here writing a story. This poem uses the relationship between a father and a daughter as a lens through which to examine themes of art, creativity, inspiration, and freedom.
