The Women in the Castle Overview
The Women in the Castle tells the story of the lives of three German women in the aftermath of World War II. Marianne von Lingenfels, the inheritor of a castle and widow to one of the resisters of the war, vows to uphold a promise she made to the members of the resistance: to keep their wives and children safe. Told from their unique perspectives, the story recounts how each of them survived the war and recounts their lives in the war's aftermath. This novel explores the themes of denial, survival, and tribalism.
