The Women in Black Overview
Madeleine St John's novel The Women in Black tells the tale of four young women working at Goode's Department Store in post-World War II Sydney, Australia. For Patty, Fay, and Magda, the job is only meant to be transitional, an occupation of time before they have children, get married, or find a better career opportunity. For Lisa, however, a young temp worker, the job feels like an entrance into womanhood. As the women prepare for the store's upcoming holiday season, they individually and collectively learn how to confront change and claim their voices. The novel explores themes regarding gender expectations, growing up, and honesty in relationships.
