The Women in Black Overview

Madeleine St John's novel The Women in Black tells the tale of four young women working at Goode's Department Store in post-World War II Sydney, Australia. For Patty, Fay, and Magda, the job is only meant to be transitional, an occupation of time before they have children, get married, or find a better career opportunity. For Lisa, however, a young temp worker, the job feels like an entrance into womanhood.
