The White Tiger, a novel set in contemporary India, is the first-person story of Balram Halwai. Born into a life of poverty that Balram becomes increasingly determined to escape, he slowly works his way into the wealthier layers of Indian society, with his burning desire to better himself erupting into an act of murder that results in him gaining enough wealth to make his lifelong dreams come true. As Balram’s story unfolds, the narrative also explores themes related to the value of family, the tensions between freedom and solitude, and the relationship of it all to Light and Dark.
