Savit Gavriel's novel, The Way Back, is the story of two youngsters – Yehuda Leib and Bluma – who travel through the Far Country, a land inhabited by demons and the dead. They have a series of supernatural encounters, culminating with their showdown at the home of the Dark Messenger – an embodiment of Death. They learn that they cannot escape death, but they can continue to live their lives. Finally, the Dark Messenger understands why people beg for their lives in their final moments. Set in a supernatural world, the novel explores the security of companionship, the inevitability of death, good versus evil, and the acceptance of reality.
