Everything you need to understand or teach The War For Gloria by Atticus Lish .
Atticus Lish’s The War for Gloria explores masculinity in the twenty-first century. The novel focuses on Corey Goltz, a high school boy growing up in and around the working-class outskirts of Boston, as he tends to his mother, Gloria, once she gets diagnosed with ALS. In addition to the struggles Corey must face in dealing with his mother’s illness, Corey must also contend with his biological father, Leonard, who proves to be a malignant presence in his and Gloria’s lives. Parallel to Corey’s journey into manhood is the journey of his friend, Adrian, who is brilliant, yet aloof, and also struggles to form an identity as a man in the twenty-first century.
