In the love story The Things We Cannot Say by Kelly Rimmer, Alice Michaels never considered the impact that World War II had on her family until she traveled to Poland at the urging of her dying grandmother. Alice learned her grandparents had helped the Jews and arranged to sneak out of Nazi-occupied Poland. Upon leaving, they took evidence back to America of the cruelties taking place in Nazi concentration camps. After hearing the truth of her grandparents’ love story, Alice rethinks the challenges she faces with an autistic son and gifted daughter. She realizes that she and her children.should enjoy life and live life to its fullest. Themes in the novel include bravery in the face of fear and grief, coming of age, and the strength of timeless love.
