The Testaments: The Sequel to The Handmaid's Tale Overview
Published in 2019, Margaret Atwood's The Testaments returns to the dystopian Republic of Gilead, 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale. It follows three narrators - Aunt Lydia, Gilead's matriarch, and two young women, Daisy and Agnes - and their experiences in relation to the totalitarian regime. The novel deals with themes of education and power, the subjugation of women, the self-destructive nature of oppressive regimes, the meaning of testaments, and the brute power of tyrannies.
