In The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin, leading characters Nassun and Hoa discover that having the love of just one person can be all the motivation it takes to persuade them to save the world. As victims of bias and hate, both Hoa and Nassun want to take out their frustration on the world by destroying at least some part of it. In the moments before they make their disastrous decisions, both are faced with an image of love that makes them realize there is hope for the world. Themes in the novel include the beginnings of hate and racism, the power of love, and the importance of stories.
