The Star Side of Bird Hill Overview
The Star Side of Bird Hill, by Naomi Jackson, tells the story of two sisters and the way in which their bond with each other and with their family is tested when they are uprooted from their home in New York City to spend a summer living with their grandmother in the small town community of Bird Hill on the island of Barbados. As they enter this new phase in their life, the two girls learn about the importance of family and heritage, as well as what is the true definition of a home, all while trying to navigate the joys, the hardships, and the complexities of growing up. The novel addresses themes such as the difficulties of being an outsider, self identity versus family identity, the value of community, the different definitions of what a home is, and the bonds of motherhood.
