The Sound of Things Falling Overview

In Juan Gabriel Vásquez's novel The Sound of Things Falling, after Antonio Yammara reads a headline about a hippopotamus that escapes from the zoo, he starts to reflect on his relationship with a mysterious man named Ricardo Laverde years prior. Not long after meeting Ricardo, Antonio saw Ricardo killed in the street. His memories of the incident and his desperation to understand what happened and why leave him asking complex questions about himself, his family, and his country. Written from Antonio's first-person point of view, the novel explores themes such as memory, trauma, and loneliness.
