The Snow Child Overview
Alaskan pioneers Mabel and Jack began seeing a mysterious girl on their property the morning after they built a snow girl in the novel “The Snow Child” By Eowyn Ivey. The girl’s appearance reminded Mablel of a fairy tale she’d been read as a child about a girl who came to life out of a snowman. The girl, whom they learned was named Faina, flitted in and out of Mable and Jack’s lives through her growing up years, eventually becoming a daughter to them. Unfortunately, just like the girl in the fairy tale Mabel remembered, Faina’s end was sad and mysterious. Themes in the novel include friendship, the roles of women, the challenges of life in Alaska and fantasy.
