The Secrets We Kept Overview
The Secrets We Kept by Lara Prescott, set in Russia and Washington, D.C. from 1949 to the present day, is a fictitious adaptation of true historical people and events. The narrators vary from chapter to chapter with a first-person narration in the past tense that occasionally shifts to a third-person narration in the present tense. The novel provides mainly female perspectives of both the East and West as the United States completed a major propaganda scheme: leaking Boris Pasternak’s banned book, Doctor Zhivago, into the USSR. The Secrets We Kept confronts themes of duality, power, knowledge and secrets, relationships, and the written word.
