The Samurai’s Garden by Gail Tsukiyama is the story of a Chinese painter named Stephen. Stephen is diagnosed with tuberculosis and is sent to live at the family beach house in Tarumi, Japan where he meets Matsu, Sachi, and Kenzo. As the war between China and Japan escalates, he falls in love with a Japanese woman named Keiko, who eventually leaves him because of the tension the war creates between them. Heartbroken, Stephen boards a train to travel home to China to help resolve his parents’ marital problems.
