The Rise and Fall of DODO Overview
Neal Stephenson and Nicole Galland’s The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. is a science fiction novel with elements of fantasy and historical fiction, told as a collection of documents including diaries, transcribed conversations and interviews, corporate documents, and historical artifacts. Historical linguist Mel is recruited to a secret branch of the U.S. government, DODO, which seeks to restore the magical power of witches dormant since 1851. As Mel and her new friends travel through time and space to discover the truth about magic and its decline, they are threatened by sinister forces both within their organization and throughout history. The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. combines adventure and satire to draw together themes at the intersection of history, technology, bureaucracy, feminism, and epistemology.
