Everything you need to understand or teach The Private Lives of Trees by Alejandro Zambra.
In Alejandro Zambra's novel The Private Lives of Trees, when Julián's wife Verónica fails to return home one night, Julián tries to stave off panic by telling his stepdaughter Daniela stories. After Daniela falls asleep and Verónica still has not surfaced, Julián distracts himself from Verónica's absence by watching television, rereading his manuscript, and obsessing over the past. Julián's mental preoccupations over the course of the night are his attempt to ward off the future he fears the morning will bring. Toying with conventions of plot and form, the novel explores themes including memory, story, and the future.
