The Port Chicago 50 Overview
The Port Chicago 50 is a historical account for young readers about World War II and civil rights by Steve Sheinkin, that tells the story of the 1944 Port Chicago disaster, and the resulting trial in which Seaman Joe Small and other black workers refused to return to work under unsafe conditions at another naval installation. The Port Chicago 50 highlights important themes of racism, how Small and other blacks prevailed against that racism, and advances the thematic argument that the hardest thing to do is usually the right thing to do.
